Rowdies sign Valentin, continue to boost back line

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have announced today that they have acquired the services of former US U-20 captain Julian Valentin. In addition to Joe Donoho and Yendry Diaz, the Rowdies look to be building a strong back line, with many of their players being six feet tall or higher. This announcement shows that not only the Rowdies, but the NASL in general, are looking to sign quality players.

Valentin played his collegiate soccer at Wake Forest, where he received a number of recognitions including Soccer America Preseason All-American, NSCAA First Team All-South and the Second All-America, ACC First Team honors and was name to ESPN’s Academic All District III team.

After college, he moved on to his pro career where he was the 29th pick of the LA Galaxy in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. Since joining the Galaxy, he had only played one match in the MLS (that against FC Dallas). But during most of his pro career, he has been loaned out by the Galaxy to the Hollywood United Hitmen and the Cleveland City Stars. This move to Tampa is exactly what might be needed in order to get his career jump-started again.

“Julian is a natural leader on and off the field and has captained the U.S. at every level he has played at. He will be a leader which is invaluable,” said Paul Dalglish, head coach. “This is another very exciting signing for the Rowdies as the start of our inaugural season nears.”

To date, the Rowdies have signed 15 players. Their preseason and training camp will start on March 1st. According to the club, the team will play five to six preseason matches around the Tampa Bay area before the start of the season in April.

  1. Tampa has made impressive signings until this point, but I certainly hope they got Valentin cheap. He hasn’t panned out thus far, and is proving to be another bad Bradenton product.
