Americans Abroad: Dempsey’s Wonder Goal Lifts Fulham past Juventus

Clint Dempsey

American midfielder Clint Dempsey chipped a miracle shot past Juventus’ goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti today to take his Fulham team into the next round of the Europa League tournament.  Fulham’s comeback 4-1 win gave them the aggregate victory, 5-4, at London’s Craven Cottage, eliminating Juventus from the competition.

Dempsey, recently back from knee injury, came into the game as a 71st minute substitute. The Texan, sporting purple shoes and a black eye, nearly scored from a cross in the 77th minute which Chimenti saved.  Then five minutes later, Dempsey, with his back to the goal, settled a pass from Dickson Etuhu about 20 yards from goal, drifted a few steps, then wheeled and lofted the ball into the far upper left corner, leaving Chimenti helpless.  GolTV commentator Ray Hudson, never at a loss for words, described Dempsey’s golazzo as “absolutely brilliant,”an “international, world class goal,” an “absolute pearler of a goal” and claimed that Dempsey will “never, ever score a better goal.”  Video of the goal, which some are already claiming is the most memorable goal in Fulham’s 130 year history, is available on the Soccer America website.
