AC ST. LOUIS PLAYS SLU TO 2-2 DRAW

ST. LOUIS (March 28, 2010) – AC St. Louis played their fifth exhibition match of the spring Sunday when they faced Saint Louis University at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The match started with some immediate action as both teams got on the board in the opening minutes of play.

Saint Louis University opened the scoring courtesy of a goal from James Dice following a free kick. Mike Roach, taking the free kick, sent a ball that found James Dice inside the six-yard box. Dice settled, contolled, and beat AC St. Louis goalkeeper Alec Dufty cleanly for the goal.

AC St. Louis hit stride just three minutes later when defender Mark Bloom unleashed forward Brad Stisser with a long ball into space. Stisser outpaced his defender and beat Billiken keeper Mark Pais to his near post with a whistling shot.

Later in the first half Zach Bauer and Brad Stisser worked a one-two combination just outside the Billiken penalty area, the resulting move ended with a pass to the foot of Ryan Moore who stepped up on the left-side and drove a first-time shot right into the chest of goalkeeper Mark Pais. Moore would get a second chance later in the match.

Mike Roach nearly claimed a goal of his own for Saint Louis in the 39th minute. Roach found himself with time and space at the top of the penalty area, but his resulting shot was just a foot wide of the right post. Within a the next minute the Billiken’s had a chance to go on top. A free kick on the right hand side from just over 25-yards out was driven in by Alex Sweetin, forcing Alec Dufty into a diving save that pushed the ball past his right post.

Ryan Moore got AC St. Louis off the mark early in the second with a well-place blast from just outside the penalty elbow. Moore’s shot arced from right to left over the face of the goal before settling in the upper left hand corner to give AC St. Louis a 2-1 advantage. Moore was back on the field due to James McCarthy leaving the game with an injury to his head.

SLU equalized just minutes later after Manuel Kante gave them a free kick one yard outside the penalty area. SLU’s Adnan Gabeljc stepped forward and bent in a superb free kick that beat Alec Dufty to his near post.

AC began to press SLU as the half progressed. Quality chances from Elvir Kafedzic, Hagop Chirishian, and Chris Salvaggione nearly gave the professionals the lead again. Elvir Kafedzic almost put AC on top in the 74 minute with a free kick effort from 27 yards. Kafedzic lined his shot directly off the face off the crossbar, with SLU’s goalkeeper getting the faintest of touches to perhaps push the shot onto the bar. Minutes later Kafedzic nearly struck again when a chance fell to him at the top of the 18-yard box, but his effort was drilled directly into the keeper’s arms.

Kafedzic, Moore, and Salvaggione managed several more chances in the closing minutes of the game as they helped rack up a 17 shot total, including 14 that were on frame. But AC St. Louis had to settle for a draw despite controlling the run of pay for most of the match.
