AC St. Louis Defeats Western Illinois 2-0 in Preseason Match

AC St. Louis defeated the Fighting Leathernecks of Western Illinois, 2-0, in St. Louis Wednesday.  ACSTL forward Elvir Kafedzic opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, which is not surprising considering how strong Elvir looked in the second half Sunday against St. Louis University.  According to a Twitter message, ACSTL added a later goal by Ambersley, whom I assume is Mike Ambersley, apparently a recent addition to the club.  Mike Ambersley, a DeSmet High School graduate who played his college ball at Indiana University, is a 27-year-old midfielder who has played over 50 games with the Rochester Rhinos.

Western Illinois, led by Dr. Eric Johnson, won the 2009 Summit League Tournament Championship, thus qualifying for the NCAA College Cup.  They were defeated in the first round, 2-1, by 24th ranked Drake University in Des Moines last November.

Wednesday’s win puts ACSTL’s record at 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss in the preseason.   Coach Claude Anelka’s club faces the Kansas City Wizards here on Saturday, April 3rd.
