AC St. Louis Fires Coach Claude Anelka

Claude Anelka

The AC St. Louis Fanatic has learned today that USSF D2 club AC St. Louis has fired Coach Claude Anelka.  Anelka, 42, is a Frenchman who previously coached at Raith Rovers in Scotland and with FC Trappes in France.  Mr. Anelka was hired by AC St. Louis on December 8, 2009 as the first coach of the new NASL franchise, owned by Jeff Cooper.  AC St. Louis is currently in last place in the in the USSF D2 NASL conference with a 2-7-1 record, but has won three games in a row, all on the road, recently.  One of the victories was a league game, the other two wins were in Lamar Hunt US Open Cup play.  AC St. Louis plays Saturday at AB Soccer Park against the Vancouver Whitecaps, and travels to LA afterwards for a Tuesday June 29 US Open Cup contest against the LA Galaxy.
I’m puzzled by the news of Coach Anelka’s firing.  The team has won three games in a row after a rough start, and the young players have never stopped giving effort during the game.  Mr. Anelka has always been gracious with Dave and I at the Fanatic.  We wish him all the best.

We will post more news on this coaching change at AB Soccer Park as it becomes available.

  1. Seems kind of an odd move with the recent win streak that includes win the Open Cup and heading to LA next week.

  2. I sure hope this is not a “salary dump” He has done ok within a injury-riddled, financially strapped situation.
The I.D. card fiasco in Carolina did get the season off on the wrong foot, and the late collapse against Chrystal Palace Baltimore may be laid at his feet.
Let’s support our guys Sat. versus Vancouver.

  4. I’m thinking this is a positive move. (aside from the winning streak) Anelka was a Vaid Brothers hire. This move indicates that Cooper is back in charge. Rumors that he paid the team bonuses for winning the cup game and also told them that payroll was no longer an issue also point to a stabilizing club.

Maybe Cooper isn’t the bad guy he was painted to be by some.

  5. I thought Anelka did alot with what he had. I’m sure if he got these guys more experience in games, this team could be formidable in a few years. I was surprised by this news.
