Bundesliga Announces League Schedule Today for 2010-2011

The German Bundesliga today announced their league schedule today for the upcoming season.  The season kicks off with a Friday match on August 20th between current champion FC Bayern Munich and 2008-2009 Bundesliga title holders VfL Wolfsburg.   Below is a link to the season schedule for the German league.

The Bundesliga is the best-represented league among the Final Four teams left in the 2010 World Cup, with all 28 players, 23 on the German national team and five who play for the Netherlands.  FC Bayern Munich is the best represented club in the World Cup semifinals, with nine players, while Hamburg SV is tied for third with Real Madrid with six players involved (FC Barcelona is second to FC Bayern Munich with seven).   The Bundesliga was well represented in the quarter-final round, too, with three players, Nelson Haedo Valdez and Lucas Barrios (Borussia Dortmund) along iwth Jonathan Santana (VfL Wolfsburg) on Paraguay’s squad;  Argentina’s Martin Demechilis (FC Bayern Munich);  Ghana’s Prince Tagoe and Isaac Vorsah (1899 Hoffenheim) and Hans Sarpei (Bayer Leverkusen) and Brazil’s VfL Wolfsburg duo of Josue and Grafite.  The American national team featured Bundesliga players Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96) and Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Bosnia and Herzegovinia international amd VfL Wolfsburg front-liner Edin Dzeko led the Bundesliga in scoring last season with 22 goals, followed closely by Bayer Leverkusen’s Stefan Kiessling with 21.   Former Roosevelt High School and St. Louis University star Vedad Ibisevic (also a Bosnia and Herzegovinia international) tied for ninth in scoring with 12 goals and 4 assists for 1899 Hoffenheim after being the league’s leading scorer at the Christmas break in the previous season, when a knee injury put him out of commission for the second half of the season.

FC Bayern Munich went to the UEFA Champions League Final last season, losing the crown to Inter Milan last May 2-0 at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.  The Munich side did the domestic double, though, winning the DFB Pokal (the German Cup) last season with a 4-0 win over Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga welcomes two new promoted teams with great traditions, FC Kaiserslautern and FC St. Pauli, who play in the St. Pauli section of Hamburg, from 2 Bundesliga for the 2010-2011 season.
