Corner Kicks: Celtic, Manchester United, Spurs Come to America

The 2010 World Cup ended Sunday, with Spain earning its first World Cup trophy in a rather lackluster contest against the Netherlands.  The South African World Cup was wildly successful, as the month-long tournament featured plenty of upsets, controversy, new heroes and great play.  It has been a joy to witness this great tournament over the last month, and ESPN did a superb job in making the World Cup totally accessible to American fans.

For those already missing their daily fix of soccer action, however, the world of soccer never stops, and there are plenty of exciting matches and friendlies this week.  First of all, the US Women’s National team plays Sweden in a friendly Tuesday night  on ESPN at 8:00 pm CDT.  SuperLiga, the tournament between MLS and Mexican teams, also starts up on Wednesday evening with games featuring the New England Revolution vs. Pumas UNAM and the Chicago Fire hosting Monarcas Morelia.  Thursday night in the competiton,  the Houston Dynamo host Pachuca (who have three American players — Herculez Gomez, Jose ‘Gringo”Torres and Marco Vidal) and Puebla visit Chivas USA.  The tournament continues on Saturday, Sunday and next Tuesday and Wednesday.  The games will be televised on the Univision family of networks.

There are also some exciting club friendlies to be played in the US this week featuring some of the most iconic clubs in the world.  On Friday night, Manchester United and Celtic collide in a friendly match televised on ESPN 2 at 6:00pm CDT.  Saturday, Tottenham meets San Jose at 3:00 pm CDT on ESPN  — I don’t recall Spurs touring America before.   Sunday, Celtic meets the Seattle Sounders in a friendly that will be broadcast at 2:00 pm on ESPN.

MLS matches featuring DC United will also be featured this week, with DC United facing Seattle Thursday night at 7:00 pm CDT on ESPN 2 and United matching up with the Los Angeles Galaxy Sunday evening on FSC.

And of course we will have four USSF D2 games streamed online on Wednesday, including the AC St. Louis- NSC Minnesota Stars Mississippi River Rivalry game and another the Puerto Rico- FC Tampa Bay contest on Thursday evening.
