The Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville men’s soccer team kicks off the 2010 season with an exhibition game against Loyola University on August 21 at Korte Stadium. SIUE also plays St. Louis University in an exhibition game August 27 at SLU’s Hermann Field in St. Louis before starting their regular season on Wednesday September 1 at home against Western Illinois University. SIUE compiled a 5-9-3 record in 2009.
SIUE second year head coach Kevin Kalish welcomes ten newcomers to his squad that plays in the Missouri Valley Conference. He has reason to be quite pleased with the additions to his team. He landed 2009 Missouri High School Player of the Year Austin Tierney, a 5’10’ midfielder from CBC High School and two All State players from Vianney High School in St. Louis County, defender Mike Garavaglia and central midfielder Steve McAnany. Kalish added two former St. Louis Chaminade High School forwards, Kevin Stoll and Matt Spiess, both transfers from the University of Illinois-Chicago who have each played three seasons at UIC. Justin Watson is a midfielder joining the SIUE squad as a transfer from the University of Memphis. Additional high school recruits are midfielder Logan Spidle from Plainfield High School, center back Josh Ward from Wentzville (MO) Holt High School, goalkeeper Zach Hosler from St. Charles (IL) North High School and Austin Cain, a 6′ forward from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.
The SIUE men’s team recently returned from a ten-day trip to England. There they played four exhibition games, going 3-0-1, and also spent time in Manchester and London, seeing Old Trafford and the new Emirates Stadium. Coach Kalish was happy with the trip, saying that “overall the trip was a resounding success. The team bonded on and off the field. The level of play was extremely high for this time of year. We got the opportunity to see some players in some different positions and start to get some idea what our lineup is going look like come Sept. 1.”
Kalish, a former first team NSCAA All-American at St. Louis University in 1999, has also added Jeremy Alumbaugh as assistant coach for the 2010 season. Alumbaugh has been an assistant coach at Missouri State, an assistant for the Chicago Fire Reserves PDL team, a staff coach for the Chicago Magic and has been Director of Soccer for St. Louis Scott Gallagher and an Assistant Director for the US Soccer Development Academy. Brian Jones, who played professionally in Portugal and Belgium, is the team’s goalkeeper coach.
