The German SuperCup match returns after an absence of 14 years. The game will feature Bundesliga title holders Bayern Munich, who also won the DFB Pokal Cup in 2010, against Bundesliga runners-up Schalke 04. The game will be televised live on Gol TV at 10:45 am CDT Saturday.
Bayern Munich not only won the double in German soccer but were in the UEFA Champions League final, losing to Inter Milan. Louis van Gaal’s team sports a similar roster to last year’s club — why tamper with success, but Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben will be unavailable for Saturday’s match, and many of the Bavarian club’s players that were involved in the 2010 World Cup may play limited roles on Saturday, as they have just returned to training recently.
Schalke 04 have made major changes on their roster for the upcoming season. Gone are striker Kevin Kuranyi, Rafinha and Heiko Westermann, but Felix Magath has brought in Real Madrid icon Raul, along with other La Liga players Christoph Metzelder and Sergio Escudero.
Jermaine Jones, who was picked for the US Men’s National Team roster for their friendly match against Brazil Tuesday, decided to skip that friendly to concentrate on preparing for Schalke’s upcoming season. Jones, who declared his intentions to play for the US after FIFA changed its rules regarding eligibility, had a lost year in 2009-2010 due to injury, and the 28-year-old looks to regain his regular spot in the Schalke starting lineup. Jones, a defensive midfielder, has already scored a goal in a preseason friendly, and Schalke have won all 12 of their tuneup matches this summer, including a victory over Bayern Munich, 3-1, last weekend.
This should be a fun match for fans of the Bundesliga. The regular season kicks off on Friday August 20 with a match featuring Bayern Munich and the 2008-2009 league champions, VfL Wolfsburg.
