The Puerto Rico Islanders took the first leg of their two game playoff series with the Rochester Rhinos Thursday night. Playing at their Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium home in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, the Islanders beat the Rhinos 2-0. The teams meet again Saturday evening in Rochester to determine which team will continue in the 2010 USSF D2 playoffs.
Forward Jonathan Fana put the Islanders on top late in the first half. The goal by the 22 year-old from the Dominican Republic sent the Islanders into halftime ahead 1-0.
The Rhinos evening went from bad to worse in the 68th minute, as Max Ferdinand received a red card. Down to ten men, the Rhinos couldn’t get on the scoreboard. The Islanders doubled their lead late in the game, as English forward David Foley scored, assisted by Fana to give Coach Colin Clarke’s Islanders the win and a two goal aggregate lead on the Rhinos going into Saturday’s match.
