As the holiday season quickly approaches, it’s time to think of gifts for your soccer-loving friends and family members — and maybe for yourself as well. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help save time and choose the perfect gift. Check out Dave’s wonderful soccer dvd collection online, and for St. Louis area soccer fans, Play Time at St. Louis Mills is a good place to shop for jerseys and soccer accessories.
I have been fortunate enough to recently make the acquaintance of Dave Wasser in Austin, Texas. Dave has a fantastic collection of soccer dvds for trade or sale. His catalog at davebrett.com http://www.davebrett.com/ includes old NASL matches from the 1970s and 1980s, including Pele’s first game with the Cosmos, Franz Beckenbauer’s debut with the Cosmos, plus many other matches involving such clubs as the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, Seattle Sounders, Dallas Tornado, Los Angeles Aztex, Chicago Sting, Minnesota Kicks, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Montreal Manic, San Jose Earthquakes, St. Louis Stars and on and on.
If that’s not enough, Dave has many Bundesliga, EPL, Serie A and US Men’s national team dvds, indoor matches and women’s soccer, along with World Cup classics. Particularily interesting to me are his selection of old “Soccer Made in Germany” classics with Toby Charles, which introduced many Americans to the game as it was a feature on PBS stations back in the day. Scroll up and down the catalog and be amazed at the dvds Dave has collected. This fantastic archive of soccer is a treasure, and you can share it in by contacting Dave, whose email address is on the catalog.
For St. Louis area fans, I discovered a fine local soccer store located at the St. Louis Mills shopping center off of Highway 370 in Hazelwood. Play Time soccer is located in the mall near the IceZone rink where the NHL’s St. Louis Blues (and sometimes visiting teams) practice. Play Time is a family owned business that used to be located on St. Charles Rock Road. They have a nice selection of replica jerseys of the top teams in EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Mexico’s Primera Division, MLS and national team jerseys at very reasonable prices. In past visits I’ve picked up a Sevilla tee shirt for $5 and the current French national team jersey for $20. The store also has a selection of kit for youngsters and other soccer accessories. Play Time’s friendly owners are also involved in Cahokia’s Latin American Soccer Association.
If you’re also a hockey fan, you can time your visit to Play Time to coincide with a Blues’ practice. Check here for Blues’ practice sessions open to the public http://blues.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=34511 and bring your camera, admission is free. Last time I was there the Blues’ Cam Janssen took a time out and skated up to the glass for some fans to take some pictures. Nice.
Good luck in your holiday shopping, and remember your soccer friends !!!
